It should work fine. An alternative is to run g15macro, which will read keypresses directly from g15daemon and auto-assign symbols to the keys in X11 without the need for any other shenanigans, and change them depending on which 'M' key is pressed - we can gain 56 'extra' keys that way.

Does the xmodmap/adding symbols to X on that page work? Aka thats alot nicer looking then just binding them to XF86_* keys
